Statistics: Egypt's population increases by one million in less than nine months

The population clock atop the building of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced yesterday that Egypt’s domestic population has reached 109,540,965. This marks an increase of one million people over 262 days, or less than nine months, as Egypt’s domestic population stood at 108,540,965 on January 1, 2026.

CAPMAS figures confirm that Egypt’s population has grown by approximately 95 million over the past century. Specifically, the population increased by 22.5 million between 1927 and 1976, a period of about 50 years. In the subsequent 50 years, from 1976 to 2026, the population rose by 72.4 million, reaching 109 million domestically on May 9, 2026.

Regarding the evolution of Egypt’s population over the last 100 years:

- 14.2 million in 1927.

- 15.9 million in 1937, an increase of 1.7 million over 10 years.

- 19 million in 1947, an increase of 3.1 million over 10 years.

- 30.1 million in 1966, an increase of 11.1 million over 19 years.

- 36.6 million in 1976, an increase of 6.5 million over 10 years.

- 48.3 million in 1986, an increase of 11.7 million over 10 years.

- 59.3 million in 1996, an increase of 11 million over 10 years.

- 72.8 million in 2006, an increase of 13.5 million over 10 years.

- 94.8 million in 2017, an increase of 22 million over 11 years.

- 109 million in May 2026, an increase of 14.2 million over 9 years.

CAPMAS data also show that Egypt’s current population (109.5 million) is equivalent to the combined populations of 14 European countries in 2035:

1. Netherlands: 18.8 million

2. Belgium: 12.2 million

3. Sweden: 10.9 million

4. Czech Republic: 10.8 million

5. Switzerland: 9.8 million

6. Greece: 9.8 million

7. Austria: 9.5 million

8. Denmark: 6.1 million

9. Norway: 5.8 million

10. Finland: 5.7 million

11. Ireland: 5.4 million

12. Croatia: 3.6 million

13. Luxembourg: 0.8 million

14. Iceland: 0.4 million

The statistics agency noted that Cairo Governorate topped the list of the ten most populous governorates as of this September, with a population of 10.5 million. Giza Governorate ranked second with 9.9 million, followed by Sharqia (8.2 million), Dakahlia (7.3 million), Beheira (7.2 million), Minya (6.7 million), Qalyubia (6.4 million), Sohag (6.1 million), Alexandria (5.7 million), and finally Gharbia (5.6 million).
