Bayern crush Union 7-0 as Kane sets record with 100th goal

Champions Bayern Munich crushed visitors Union Berlin 7-0 at the Allianz Arena in the opening match of the fourth round of the German Bundesliga. Frenchman Michael Olise starred with a hat-trick, while England’s Harry Kane added a brace to his record tally.

Bayern moved to 10 points in first place on a temporary basis, closing the gap on Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund.

The goals for the team managed by Belgian Vincent Kompany were scored by Jamal Musiala (18), Kane (39 from a penalty and 54), Olise (43, 73, and 76), and Morocco’s Ismaïla Sarr (70).

With his first goal against Union Berlin, the English striker reached his 100th Bundesliga goal in just 98 matches, setting a new record for the competition.

Dieter Müller held the previous record, as the former Cologne striker needed 129 matches to reach his 100th Bundesliga goal in the early 1970s.

By scoring his first hat-trick for Bayern Munich, a club he joined in the summer of 2024, while also assisting a goal and winning a penalty, Olise confirmed his exceptional start to the season. He has now scored eight goals and provided three assists in seven matches across all competitions.

Among the top five European leagues—Germany, England, Spain, France, and Italy—Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo remains the only player to reach the 100-goal mark in fewer matches than Kane, achieving the feat in 92 games for Real Madrid in La Liga starting in 2010.

Following the long international break at the end of this month and into early October, Bayern will visit neighboring Augsburg before traveling to Norway to face Viking in Stavanger.

France

Monaco continued their strong start to the French Ligue 1 season by defeating Lens, last season’s runner-up, 2-1 in the fifth round, taking sole possession of the top spot in the standings.

Young German forward Paris Brunner gave the principality’s side the lead in the first half, scoring his sixth goal in seven matches since the start of the season (32).

Matteo Guendouzi equalized for Lens (60) in the team’s first match since the sudden dismissal of their German manager Dino Toppmöller after just six games in charge.

Yannick Cahuzac, a former Lens player, replaced Toppmöller after having been part of his coaching staff.

However, Cahuzac and his team failed to secure at least a point after defender Jonathan Gradit scored an own goal (84).

Monaco remain unbeaten, extending their tally to 13 points after five matches, leading their closest pursuers, Lille and Rennes, by three points before the remainder of the round’s fixtures are completed over the weekend.

American Folarin Balogun made his first appearance of the season, coming on as a substitute in the 76th minute, marking his first outing since the World Cup.

Champions Paris Saint-Germain will visit their traditional rivals Marseille today.
