Portugal's law banning face coverings in public places takes effect on the 23rd of this month, with fines for violations ranging from 400 to 3,000 euros.

The Embassy of the State of Kuwait in Lisbon confirmed that the new law prohibiting the use of clothing that conceals the face or prevents it from being visible in public places in Portugal will come into effect on September 23 of this month.

In a statement, the embassy said that violations of the new law are punishable by a fine ranging from 400 euros (459.4 US dollars) to 3,000 euros (3,445.3 US dollars).

It clarified that the new law bans covering the face in streets, public places, and venues providing services to citizens, as well as in events, sports activities, and demonstrations.

The embassy noted that the law also criminalizes compelling any person to conceal their face through threats, violence, coercion, or abuse of authority. In such cases, the penalty may extend to imprisonment for up to two years or a fine, with enhanced penalties if the victim is a minor.

The embassy urged Kuwaiti citizens to respect and comply with the laws and regulations in force in Portugal during their visits, emphasizing the importance of familiarizing themselves with local legal requirements to avoid legal liability or fines.
