Kuwait: Targeting oil tankers is a grave violation of human rights

Kuwait emphasized that targeting oil tankers constitutes a grave violation of human rights, warning of its severe environmental consequences and the resulting threat to the right to life.

This was stated in a statement delivered by Dr. Nida Al-Dhabib, Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations in Geneva, during the general debate on agenda item three of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council. In her remarks, she underscored the importance of protecting and promoting human rights comprehensively and without selectivity.

Al-Dhabib affirmed the necessity of integrating the various dimensions of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, with the right to development at the forefront. She noted that the protection and promotion of rights “admit no fragmentation or selectivity,” considering developmental stability and social justice as fundamental pillars for ensuring human dignity. This, she argued, requires a balanced approach that guarantees the integration of all dimensions of human rights without privileging one right over another.

Al-Dhabib reiterated Kuwait’s call for consolidating a constructive approach to international cooperation based on substantive dialogue, and for steering clear of politicization and the application of double standards in addressing human rights issues.
