Why is it recommended to brush your teeth before breaking the fast?

Tooth brushing is a fundamental habit for oral health and the prevention of cavities and gum disease, but the timing of morning brushing often raises a recurring question: is it better to brush before or after breakfast? Dental recommendations indicate that brushing before breakfast is a suitable option, as plaque-causing bacteria multiply during sleep, and brushing upon waking helps remove them and protect tooth enamel.

For those who prefer to brush after breakfast, it is advised to wait about 30 minutes, especially after consuming acidic foods and beverages, because acids temporarily affect the enamel, making immediate brushing more likely to cause erosion. Therefore, those who do not have time to wait can brush their teeth immediately upon waking, without waiting after eating.

Regardless of the timing, brushing twice a day for two minutes remains essential, using a soft-bristled toothbrush that is replaced every three to four months, and cleaning between teeth daily with dental floss. It is also recommended to limit sugar intake to maintain oral health.
