Irregular meal times between workdays and holidays pose a silent threat to men's heart health!

Frequent shifts in meal timing between official workdays and weekends are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, particularly among men. This biological disruption, resulting from alternating dietary patterns, is termed “meal timing misalignment” by researchers. The concept describes a condition closely resembling jet lag caused by crossing time zones, but it occurs simply due to the disruption of the body’s internal clock by delaying or advancing the timing of main meals. The issue is not limited to delaying a single meal; rather, it concerns measuring the time difference between the midpoint of the eating window on workdays and that on days off. Biological identity is negatively affected as the entire eating window shifts by several hours.

The findings were based on an analysis of data from more than 104,000 adults in a long-term French study that tracked cases of coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. The study found that each additional hour of difference significantly increased the risk for men, while no similar association was established for women. Additionally, the study did not find an association with strokes. Scientists attribute this effect to the fact that the body operates according to precise internal biological clocks that regulate digestion, sleep, hormone secretion, blood pressure, and insulin sensitivity. Meal timing is a key signal that synchronizes these clocks; therefore, sudden and continuous changes create a mismatch between daily behavior and the biological rhythm.

Despite these indicators, the observational nature of the study underscores that it does not imply imposing strict restrictions on family meals. This is especially true given that the sample included a high proportion of health-conscious women, which limits the generalizability of the results. Traditional factors such as food quality, physical activity, smoking cessation, weight management, and sleep remain the fundamental pillars of heart health, with meal timing considered an additional factor that reinforces this system.
