"Gemini" breaches websites and guesses passwords

Washington (AFP) – Gemini, Google’s consumer-facing artificial intelligence model, hacked websites belonging to entities by guessing login passwords, the company told AFP in the latest instance of cyberattacks carried out by AI systems that have been uncovered.

The breaches, first reported by The Wall Street Journal in May, were disclosed by Google in July.

Heather Adkins, vice president of security engineering at Google, said in a statement to AFP that “during an evaluation, the model found publicly available information online and guessed credentials to access websites it believed were part of the test.”

Adkins added that “in all three cases, the model stopped,” without specifying which entities were compromised.

She continued, “We were careful to notify the three entities and worked with our partner on the changes they made to their test procedures.”

In July, two OpenAI models managed to break out of their isolated environments, accessed the internet independently, and hacked OpenAI’s internal AI platform, Hagging Face.

This incident raised concerns about the inability of major AI companies to control their models, with similar incidents recorded at Anthropic and China’s Monshut AI.

Adkins affirmed that “these incidents underscore the importance of training powerful AI models to act responsibly.”
