Kuwait: Targeting oil tankers is a grave violation of human rights

Kuwait stressed on Friday that the targeting of oil tankers constitutes a serious violation of human rights, warning of their severe environmental impacts and the resulting threat to the right to life. This was stated in a statement delivered by Dr. Nada Al-Dabous, Second Secretary of Kuwait’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, during the general debate on agenda item 3 of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council. She emphasized the importance of protecting and promoting human rights comprehensively and non-selectively. Al-Dabous underscored the need for the interdependence of all dimensions of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, with the right to development at the forefront. She argued that the protection and promotion of rights “admit no fragmentation or selectivity,” considering developmental stability and social justice as two fundamental pillars for ensuring human dignity, which requires a balanced approach that guarantees the integration of all dimensions of human rights without privileging one right over another. Al-Dabous reiterated Kuwait’s call to consolidate a constructive approach to international cooperation based on objective dialogue, while avoiding the politicization of human rights issues and the application of double standards.
