"Health": Field Epidemiology Training Program has contributed to responding to health events and risks over 33 years
The Ministry of Health and Population celebrated World Field Epidemiology Day through an event organized by the General Administration of Epidemiology and Surveillance within the Preventive Medicine and Public Health Sector, on the sidelines of the first cohort of the Field Epidemiology Training Program (Intermediate Level) under the “One Health” track.
Dr. Amr Qandil, Deputy Minister of Health and Population, stated that enhancing the capabilities of field epidemiology professionals is a fundamental pillar for strengthening the readiness of the public health system. He explained that addressing health risks requires the ability to detect unusual events early, analyze them accurately, and translate epidemiological analysis into timely practical actions. He noted that the program is based on three progressive training levels: basic, intermediate, and advanced.
Dr. Naima Aabed, Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Egypt, praised the ongoing partnership with the ministry in building capacity and strengthening surveillance and response systems. He emphasized that field epidemiology serves as a crucial link between scientific knowledge and practical application, and highlighted the importance of continued cooperation and experience-sharing among countries, particularly in light of health risks that may transcend geographical borders.
Dr. Razi Hamad, Head of the Preventive Medicine and Public Health Sector, affirmed that investing in specialized human resources is a key axis for developing the surveillance and response system. He pointed out that since its launch in 1993, the program has graduated hundreds of specialists and obtained the status of a “WHO Collaborating Center,” becoming the first of its kind in the Eastern Mediterranean and Africa regions. He also noted the development of its training tracks to include “One Health,” mental health, vector-borne diseases, and immunization.
