In an incident similar to those that occurred recently in Japan and other countries, a 17-year-old girl in Durango, Colorado, woke up to find a black bear moving inside her bedroom after it had removed a protective screen and entered through a partially open window.

According to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife agency, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. while the girl was sleeping in her apartment. When she saw the bear advancing toward her bed, she hid under the covers. The bear then approached and pushed against her from above the covers. When she continued screaming, it retreated. A wildlife official stated that the layers of bedding provided her with crucial protection.

State authorities are searching for the bear after reports indicated it had broken into another home the following day, making it a recurring threat to residents.

Wildlife experts say that drought has reduced some natural food sources, while bears are entering the pre-hibernation phase and seeking to consume up to 20,000 calories per day. Authorities have urged residents to keep windows and doors closed, secure trash, and remove any food that might attract bears.
