Empty schools and classes under tents in Venezuela two months after the devastating earthquake

The return to school has been disrupted in Venezuela’s La Guaira state, where classrooms remain empty and others have been set up under tents, more than two months after two earthquakes killed over 6,500 people in the country. Dozens of schools in the state, located north of Caracas and the hardest hit by the quakes on June 24, have been damaged. Of the 190 buildings that collapsed, 11 were educational facilities. Additionally, around 60 schools have been used as shelters for thousands of people who lost their homes. Despite the tragedy, industrial engineer Amani Núñez, 40, who took his two children to school, believes life must go on. “We have to learn to live with what the earthquakes left behind,” he said.
