Burning foot pain at night: A sign of a potentially life-threatening disease
Burning pain in the feet at rest, particularly at night, may be a warning sign of a serious condition threatening blood flow to the extremities, according to the Daily Mail. Known as "rest pain," this discomfort affects the foot or toes even while sitting and can indicate "chronic limb-threatening ischemia" (CLTI), an advanced stage of peripheral artery disease (PAD) caused by plaque buildup, narrowed blood vessels, and reduced blood flow to the legs and feet.
Doctors warn that ignoring this pain can lead to non-healing ulcers, tissue damage, or limb amputation. The condition is also associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, with up to 80% of patients suffering from rest pain dying within 10 years of diagnosis.
Key symptoms include severe burning pain, hair loss on the feet, pale and shiny skin, leg cramps during walking, and toes turning purple or blue.
Risk factors include smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and an unhealthy diet. Therefore, physical activity helps support circulation.
Treatment requires managing the underlying condition with medications for blood clots, cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes, along with lifestyle changes, most notably quitting smoking. In advanced cases, interventions such as angioplasty, stenting, or bypass surgery may be necessary.
