Sisi to Abbas: The Palestinian issue remains the central issue in the region until it is resolved fairly and comprehensively

Cairo – Khadija Hamouda

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed that the Palestinian cause will remain the central issue in the region until it is resolved in a fair and comprehensive manner. He highlighted Egypt’s exhausting efforts to support its brotherly Palestinian people and to work toward achieving a settlement in accordance with international legitimacy, ensuring the Palestinian people obtain their full rights, foremost among them the establishment of an independent state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He described this as the only path to achieving lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.

These remarks were made during President El-Sisi’s reception yesterday of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Mohamed El-Shenawy, the official spokesperson for the Presidency, stated that the Egyptian President welcomed his Palestinian counterpart, reiterating that the Palestinian cause will remain the region’s central issue until a fair and comprehensive settlement is reached. He pointed to Egypt’s tireless efforts to support the brotherly Palestinian people and to pursue a settlement based on international legitimacy, guaranteeing the Palestinian people’s full rights, including the establishment of an independent state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as the sole avenue for lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.

For his part, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his pleasure at visiting Egypt and meeting with the President, appreciating Egypt’s significant efforts in supporting the Palestinian cause and protecting the rights of the Palestinian people.

The official spokesperson noted that the President emphasized Egypt’s rejection of all forms of escalation and Israeli violations against the Palestinian people. He affirmed Egypt’s continued efforts, in coordination with mediators, to implement the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip reached during the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit in October 2025, and stressed the necessity for all parties to adhere to the agreement’s terms, including halting escalation, ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid, and creating conditions for early recovery and reconstruction.

In this context, the President reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast position against the displacement of the Palestinian people or any attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause. He confirmed Egypt’s support for the Palestinian Authority and for efforts to achieve consensus among the various Palestinian factions to enhance the interests of the brotherly people.

The official spokesperson mentioned that the Palestinian President briefed President El-Sisi on the latest developments related to the Palestinian cause, including the tragic situation in the West Bank resulting from Israeli occupation policies. He expressed appreciation for Egypt’s historic and consistent role in supporting the Palestinian cause and achieving a permanent and just settlement, and highlighted the Palestinian people’s appreciation for Egypt’s efforts in this regard. He stressed the importance of continuing consultations between the two countries on the situation in the Palestinian territories and regional developments. The Egyptian President welcomed this, and the two sides agreed to intensify political coordination mechanisms at all levels in the coming phase.
