As the belief that using a phone while it is charging damages the battery has become widespread, technology experts assert that this notion is no longer accurate for most modern smartphones. Engadget reported that using a phone while it is charging does not directly harm the battery, but it may slow down the charging process when running apps or games that consume significant power.

The report explained that many modern smartphones utilize Bypass Charging technology, which directs power from the charger directly to the device’s operation, thereby reducing strain on the battery and limiting heat buildup. Although this technology is available in devices from companies such as Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, and ZTE, iPhones do not currently support it; however, using an iPhone while it is charging is not inherently harmful.

Experts agree that elevated phone temperature is the most significant factor in battery degradation. Therefore, they recommend avoiding games and resource-intensive apps while charging if the device becomes hot, while everyday tasks such as browsing the internet, replying to messages, and making calls remain safe in most cases. The report also notes that common misconceptions, such as the need to fully discharge the battery before charging it or the idea that overnight charging damages it, no longer apply to modern smartphones equipped with intelligent power management systems.
