India and the United States begin joint military exercises in Uttarakhand

India and the United States launched the 22nd edition of the joint military exercise “Yudh Abhyas” yesterday at the Outpost Training Center in the town of Udhampur, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, in northern India.

In a statement, the Indian Ministry of Defence said that military officials from both countries addressed the participating forces, which comprise 600 personnel from each side. The statement noted that the exercise is being conducted simultaneously at Udhampur in Uttarakhand and at the Mahajan Field Firing Range in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan.

The statement explained that the exercise aims to enhance the joint military capabilities of the two armies in employing integrated combat teams in mountainous and semi-mountainous terrain, with a focus on operations that are primarily infantry-based.

It added that the exercise will work to improve operational interoperability, facilitate the exchange of best field practices, and strengthen joint planning and execution mechanisms.

The training will include the use of drones and autonomous systems for surveillance and reconnaissance, as well as demonstrations of modern weapon systems at the Mahajan Field Firing Range.

Specialist experts from both armies will also exchange views on emerging technologies and developments in multi-domain warfare.

The exercise provides an opportunity for the two armies to exchange tactics, techniques, and procedures, and to enhance their ability to conduct coordinated military operations across diverse terrains and operational environments.
