Man City defeat Man United with 10 men

Manchester City secured the Manchester derby with a 1-0 victory over hosts Manchester United at Old Trafford in the fourth round of the English Premier League.

The 23rd minute saw a notable incident when referee Andrew Madley showed a red card to Manchester City’s Phil Foden following a tackle on Bruno Fernandes, leaving the Citizens to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match.

Despite being a man down, Manchester City managed to break the deadlock in the second half, with Norway’s Erling Haaland scoring the only goal of the game in the 62nd minute.

With this win, Manchester City moved up to 12 points, placing them second in the Premier League table, level on points with leaders Arsenal, who hold the advantage on goal difference.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s tally remained at 4 points, keeping them in 13th place in the standings.

Brighton also added to the woes of Coventry City, who returned to the top flight for the first time since the 2000-2001 season under former international star Frank Lampard, thrashing them 5-0.

Arsenal strengthened their grip on the top spot with a fourth consecutive victory, beating hosts Sunderland 2-0.

Brazilian substitute Bruno Guimaraes (58th minute) and Bukayo Saka (90+8th minute, penalty) scored Arsenal’s goals.

The defending champions continued their points haul, moving to 12 points at the summit. Spanish goalkeeper David Raya stood out, making a high save to deny Enzo Le Fee’s penalty in the 56th minute, while Guimaraes shone with a brilliant strike that found the bottom corner of the net in the 58th minute.

His performance validated the decision of his Spanish manager, Mikel Arteta, who brought him on in the second half for Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The London side could have extended their lead with a Saka shot in the 74th minute and a Kai Havertz header in the 75th, but Dutch goalkeeper Robin Ruffes saved the former, while Dan Ballard cleared the latter.

Referee Andrew Madley disallowed a Jurrien Timber goal for offside in the 78th minute. The second goal came in the seventh minute of stoppage time from a penalty awarded after Mozambican defender Renildo Mandava was sent off for the foul.
