Island disappears from Canadian lake, then reappears 30 kilometers away

The story initially seemed like a trick created by artificial intelligence technologies—a densely forested island floating in a well-known lake that does not appear on any map. However, satellite imagery and testimonies from sailors confirmed that the scene was real.

The mysterious vegetative mass appeared during the summer in Williston Lake in British Columbia, Canada. It measures approximately 150 meters in length and 75 meters in width, carrying dozens of trees along with small birds and animals, making it resemble a floating forest.

After being spotted near Finlay Arm, the island disappeared from view in mid-August. The company operating the reservoir began tracking it using satellite imagery, drones, and boat reports.

On August 31, it was found moored to the shore in Ooska Arm, having traveled about 30 kilometers over 15 days. This indicates that the lake did not swallow it; rather, the water carried it to a new location.

Company officials believe the island formed from logs and plant debris that accumulated near the shore, with trees subsequently growing on top. It may have been freed by high water levels resulting from winter snowfall and summer rains. However, the explanation has not been fully settled, as some geologists argue that the accumulation of logs alone does not easily explain the formation of a forested mass of this size.

The company has warned against attempting to climb onto it, as its base may consist only of a thin, unstable layer of interwoven trunks and roots.
