Interior Ministry Raises Readiness for Start of Academic Year with 870 Patrols and 338 Traffic Surveillance Cameras
The Ministry of Interior announced the raising of its security and operational readiness levels with the launch of the 2026/2027 academic year, deploying 870 security and traffic patrols and 338 traffic surveillance cameras, and launching its awareness campaign “Waqaaya.. Wa Aman” (Protection and Safety), which will run throughout the academic year.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior, the security and operational readiness elements deployed at the start of the academic year included 870 security and traffic patrols, comprising 520 in the Directorates of Security Affairs sector, 200 in the General Directorate of Traffic, and 150 in the General Directorate of Emergency Police.
The Ministry also enhanced the deployment of its patrols around schools, access roads to schools, and various vital locations, contributing to the regulation of traffic flow, reducing congestion, and ensuring the safety of students and road users. The preparations included 338 traffic surveillance cameras to monitor roads and vehicle movements, as well as the activation of the flashing system in traffic signals to enhance traffic fluidity.
Regarding operational roles, the statement outlined the following:
- Directorates of Security: Securing the perimeters of schools and vital locations and enhancing security presence.
- General Directorate of Traffic: Regulating traffic flow and signals, and monitoring roads from the control room via 338 traffic surveillance cameras.
- General Directorate of Emergency Police: Immediate intervention and rapid response to reports received via 112, and readiness to receive emergency calls around the clock on the emergency hotline in case of any incidents.
- Awareness Campaign “Protection and Safety.. Begins with Community Awareness”: At the start of the academic year, the Ministry of Interior, represented by the General Directorate of Relations and Security Media, launched its awareness campaign “Waqaaya.. Wa Aman” (Protection and Safety), which will continue throughout the year with programs and activities targeting students, parents, educational staff, and the public. The Ministry calls on members of society to adopt safe practices and responsible behavior.
The safe practices emphasized by the campaign, according to the statement, include: adhering to traffic rules and pedestrian crossing lines, refraining from sharing banking data or verification codes with any entity, monitoring children, and fostering dialogue within the family.
The campaign’s key themes include: traffic safety, protection of minors, drug prevention, cyber security, intellectual extremism, and environmental awareness.
