Japan Leads the World's Best Countries for Retirees in 2026

As interest in travel among seniors grows after retirement, a recent ranking has revealed the destinations that offer the most suitable experiences for travelers in this age group, based on factors including safety, healthcare, walkability, and amenities tailored for older adults.

According to a recent study conducted by Firebird Tours, which covered 100 countries, Japan topped the list of the best destinations for retirees in 2026, benefiting from its senior-friendly infrastructure, high safety standards, quality healthcare, and special perks at certain museums and public transport systems.

Germany came in second, followed by Spain, Slovenia, and Switzerland. The top ten also included Austria, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and Canada.

Europe made a strong showing in the rankings, securing eight of the top ten spots. The study relied on seven criteria, including the proportion of the population aged 65 and over, the availability of discounts, city walkability, safety, healthcare services, and cultural experiences.
