Crowds at Mount Blanc pave the way for new restrictions and regulation of visitor numbers

The Mont Blanc Trail, one of Europe’s most popular hiking routes, is facing growing debate over how to manage visitor numbers, as surging demand has led to congestion on certain sections and increased pressure on the environment and surrounding local communities.

Local officials on the French side have proposed linking future use of parts of the Tour du Mont Blanc trail to advance bookings for stays in certified mountain huts or designated camping areas, with plans to implement new rules starting in spring 2027.

According to Euronews, these are currently proposed regulatory measures rather than a comprehensive ban on the entire trail.

This comes amid high demand for mountain accommodation facilities, while an official booking system is already reserving a number of huts along the route for the 2026 season.

The proposals aim to strike a balance between sustaining tourism activity, protecting the mountain environment, and reducing pressure on local residents and services, amid calls for coordinated action among France, Italy, and Switzerland.
