A college backpack on the shoulder of a homeless man in Texas reveals he was a former college football star and his life has changed

In a park in Austin, Texas, a backpack bearing the Indiana University logo caught the attention of Jasper Steinmetz, a recent graduate of the same university, prompting him to approach the owner and strike up a conversation out of a sense of shared affiliation.

According to CBS News, Steinmetz learned that the man, Samson James, was also from Indiana and had been homeless for eight months. When Steinmetz later searched for James’s name online, he was shocked by what he found: the man he had just met was a former sports star who had played running back for the Indiana University football team starting in 2019, before transferring to Purdue University and later returning to Indiana as a walk-on player.

According to U.S. media reports quoting James himself, a knee injury ended his dream of reaching the National Football League (NFL), followed by a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, which led him to leave university and ultimately resulted in him becoming homeless.

Steinmetz did not limit himself to a brief conversation; he launched an online fundraising campaign to help James rebuild his life. The campaign drew a massive wave of support, including donations from James’s former teammates, raising approximately $20,000. The funds helped secure housing, clothing, furniture, and other essential needs for James.
