Structure Inspired by Eggshells to Protect Spacecraft

Chinese researchers have developed a lightweight protective structure inspired by the shape of an eggshell, which could in the future enhance the ability of spacecraft to withstand high-speed impacts caused by orbital debris. According to the Russian news agency Sputnik, researchers from Dalian University of Technology designed a structure consisting of a series of eggshell-shaped aluminum shells filled with water, placed between two aluminum plates, with the aim of distributing and absorbing impact energy. The researchers explained that the effectiveness of the design does not depend on the rigidity of each individual shell, but rather on the interaction among the shells upon impact. Their arrangement allows the elements to deform and collapse sequentially, helping to distribute mechanical energy over a larger area rather than concentrating it at a single point. The water inside the shells provides an additional shock-absorption mechanism; it moves within the casings when the structure is struck, helping to limit the transmission of shock waves and dissipate part of the energy.
