NASA prepares for new space test that could change the future of navigation between Earth and the Moon

NASA is preparing to launch a new space mission named “Capstone 2” in 2027, as part of efforts to develop navigation and communications technologies needed to support future human missions to the Moon.

The mission will feature two small spacecraft operating in a close formation within orbits influenced by the combined gravity of the Earth and the Moon, enabling the testing of complex space maneuvers and high-precision measurements of mutual gravitational effects.

The mission will also test advanced navigation and communications systems that rely on optical sensors, celestial body tracking, and data from ground-based telescopes, aiming to enhance the precision of spacecraft movements in this unique environment. The mission builds on the success of Capstone 1, which demonstrated the effectiveness of this type of orbit, and its results are expected to support upcoming Artemis missions to the Moon, including spacecraft rendezvous and docking operations.

NASA views these tests as a crucial step toward establishing a sustainable infrastructure around the Moon, paving the way for crewed bases and enhancing the prospects for future missions to Mars and deep space.
