Manchester United begins its campaign with an 'Azerbaijani' fixture

English Premier League club Manchester United returns to UEFA Champions League competition today as they host Azerbaijan’s Sabah FK at Old Trafford in the final match of the first group-stage matchday. United seek to exploit home advantage to establish early control over their group standings.

Led by manager Michael Carrick, Manchester United hold a clear advantage in terms of squad depth, continental experience, and the support of their home crowd. The United attacking trio of Bryan Mbeumo, Marcus Rashford, and Benjamin Šeško will look to apply early pressure, while Sabah are expected to rely on a compact defensive block in midfield and quick transitions to launch attacks through players such as Lancelot Mikelze and Feliks Simić.

In one of the most striking stories of the tournament, Sabah prepare for their Champions League debut just nine years after the club’s founding, having been established in 2017. Last season, the team secured their first-ever Azerbaijan Premier League title, finishing nine points clear of Qarabağ, thereby earning a historic opportunity to compete among Europe’s elite.

The team is managed by Lithuanian coach Valdas Dambrauskas, whose managerial career began in an unconventional manner, having first gained public attention through his participation in the popular quiz show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”

Today’s first matchday concludes with several other fixtures: Turkey’s Fenerbahçe face Italy’s Roma; the Netherlands’ PSV Eindhoven take on Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk; Germany’s Bayern Munich play Norway’s Bodø/Glimt; Italy’s Como, making their continental debut in club history, host Germany’s RB Leipzig; and the Czech Republic’s Slavia Prague meet France’s Lens.
