OpenAI announced that an advanced artificial intelligence system it developed has arrived at a proposed solution to the Navier-Stokes problem, one of the most famous problems in mathematics and one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems, in a move that could represent a significant leap in the use of AI in scientific research. According to Sky News Arabia, the Navier-Stokes equations are used to describe the motion of fluids, such as water and air, but a fundamental mathematical question associated with them has remained unanswered for nearly 90 years: do the solutions to these equations always remain regular in three dimensions, or can they develop into what is mathematically known as a “singularity” within a finite time? OpenAI stated that its AI-developed system has provided a proposed proof that such a singularity can occur.
