Russian medical innovation paves the way for using oil as a local alternative to pharmaceutical preparations

Researchers from the Perem Academy of Pharmacy, in collaboration with Perem Technical University and the National Scientific Research Center for Oil “Shelbman,” have discovered the potential to use high-viscosity oil extracted from the Khanty-Mansi region fields in western Siberia as a medical alternative to the well-known Azerbaijani “naphthalan” oil, which is widely used in the production of therapeutic creams and ointments. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that this Russian oil is approximately 1.9 times more effective than the imported product in alleviating pain during the first hours of application, alongside a notable ability to accelerate wound healing. Scientists divided the raw material into three samples: one subjected to simple preliminary cleaning, another undergoing deep processing, and a third consisting of the thick residues resulting from the distillation process. Medical examinations conducted on laboratory mice confirmed the safety of all three samples, showing they were entirely free of any toxic effects. The results indicated that the deeply processed sample exhibited superior biological and analgesic properties compared to the well-known pharmaceutical drug diclofenac. The Siberian field from which the samples were sourced is distinguished by its vast size and potential for extensive industrial exploitation, making it an ideal and sustainable option for producing more effective topical medications at a lower economic cost. Research teams are currently preparing to move to the next phase, which involves developing the final pharmaceutical formulation and conducting necessary clinical trials on humans, paving the way for the preparation’s registration and official approval for large-scale commercial production by Russian pharmaceutical companies.
