Zain Improves Its Rating in the MSCI ESG Index

Zain Group announced the upgrade of its rating in the MSCI ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Index to AA, placing it in the “Leaders” category—the highest tier in the Kuwaiti market. This recognition underscores the effectiveness of the Group’s governance and sustainability frameworks across its operations and markets.

Zain, a leading innovator in technology markets across the Middle East and Africa, stated that this upgrade reflects the success of its strategic approach to integrating ESG principles into various operational processes, its commitment to applying best-in-class governance standards and policies, its enhanced ability to anticipate risks, and its focus on creating long-term sustainable value. It also highlights the Group’s institutional approach that balances responsible growth with sustainable performance.

The Group emphasized that this upgrade embodies the growing recognition of its ability to align business objectives with governance requirements, translating commitments into measurable outcomes that reflect the effectiveness of its approach according to global best practices. This demonstrates an institutional capacity to convert strategic directions into evaluable and verifiable practices.

Bader Nasser Al-Kharafi, Vice Chairman and CEO of Zain Group, said, “Achieving an AA rating in the MSCI ESG Index is the culmination of Zain’s long-term institutional journey as the Group transforms into a leading technology conglomerate in the regional markets, driven by purpose.” He added, “This advanced upgrade reflects a collective commitment across the Group’s operations and confirms the success of disciplined implementation of its operational strategy, alongside the continuous reinforcement of governance practices across all business units.”

Al-Kharafi further noted, “The boards of directors, governance structures, and sustainability teams within the Zain ecosystem are integrating ESG considerations into decision-making, execution, and strategic planning, ensuring that performance aligns with our long-term commitments. Building institutional leadership is achieved only through transparency, accountability, and continuous performance measurement, which has strengthened our ability to anticipate changes and reinforce stakeholder trust.”

The rating results praised Zain’s continued progress on several key issues. The Group recorded performance exceeding the telecommunications sector average in areas such as privacy protection, data security, human resource management, environmental practices, and corporate conduct, including the effectiveness of internal controls, robustness of regulatory frameworks, and adopted corporate policies.

The results highlighted Zain’s distinction in data security practices compared to peers in the telecommunications and IT sectors, supported by an integrated system of proactive measures and incident response mechanisms, as well as the application of due diligence requirements to ensure suppliers adhere to best practices in cybersecurity and data protection.

These results also shed light on the Group’s efforts to enhance employee engagement and foster a responsible and inclusive work environment through initiatives that support a corporate culture based on integrity, accountability, and empowerment of talent. These initiatives reinforce ethical behavior and the employee experience as central elements in supporting long-term sustainable corporate performance.

Zain’s AA rating reflects the strategic importance the Group places on strengthening its corporate governance system through effective oversight, ethical leadership, transparent disclosure, and disciplined risk management, regarded as fundamental pillars to support sustainability and enhance business resilience in the face of rapid changes.

These practices give stakeholders greater confidence in the Group’s ability to achieve responsible growth and uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability across all activities and businesses. These pillars are gaining increasing importance in a global business environment characterized by accelerating technological transformations, growing regulatory requirements, and escalating geopolitical challenges.

MSCI ESG ratings measure companies’ ability to manage inherent risks and opportunities related to financially material sustainability issues, according to the nature and requirements of each sector. The rating is based on a comprehensive assessment of companies’ exposure to these risks and the efficiency of their adopted governance and management frameworks in addressing them, providing a globally recognized indicator of the strength of corporate practices and their ability to achieve long-term sustainable performance.

Zain continues to build on this achievement by developing ESG frameworks, enhancing measurement and disclosure methodologies, and reinforcing responsible practices across its operational processes, supply chain, and digital ecosystem.

Through its corporate strategy, Zain Group aims to leverage sustainability as an enabler for growth and innovation, supporting the creation of shared and sustainable value for shareholders, customers, employees, communities, and the economies in which it operates. This enhances its ability to deliver long-term impact that transcends traditional operational and financial results.
