State Security Court Upholds 5-Year Imprisonment of Mohammed Al-Mutair for Insulting the Emirate’s Throne, and 3 Years for Spreading False News and Insulting the Attorney General

The State Security and Terrorism Crimes Department at the Court of Appeal upheld yesterday the first-instance court’s ruling sentencing former Member of Parliament Mohammed Al-Mutairi to five years’ imprisonment with hard labor. Al-Mutairi was brought to trial on charges of undermining the rights and authority of His Highness the Amir, attributing statements to His Highness the Amir without special authorization, showing disrespect due to the Head of the Judicial Authority, insulting the Head and members of the Judicial Authority as well as members of the Public Prosecution, attempting to influence judges of the Constitutional Court through orders and requests to issue a ruling in his favor, in addition to abusing social media platforms. The court also upheld the first-instance ruling sentencing Al-Mutairi to three years’ imprisonment with hard labor in a separate case accusing him of spreading false news and insulting the Attorney General.
