Excessive Coffee Consumption Threatens Women's Health

A recent scientific study has shown that excessive coffee consumption may lead to reduced bone density in postmenopausal women, while moderate tea consumption emerges as a supportive factor in strengthening bone structure and protecting against osteoporosis. According to the study conducted by Flinders University and published in the journal Nutrients, drinking more than five cups of coffee daily is associated with a significant decrease in mineral density in the hip and femoral neck bones, areas most susceptible to fractures caused by osteoporosis. Conversely, researchers confirmed that moderate coffee consumption, at a rate of two to three cups per day, is entirely safe and does not cause any harm to the skeletal system.

The study relied on tracking the dietary patterns of approximately 9,704 women aged 65 and older over a ten-year period. The results indicated that catechins, compounds abundant in tea, play a positive role in stimulating bone formation and slowing down bone degradation. This beneficial effect was more pronounced among women suffering from obesity. On the other hand, it was found that caffeine in coffee may hinder the body’s absorption of calcium and negatively affect bone metabolism, particularly among women who consume larger amounts of alcohol. However, this negative effect can be easily mitigated by simply adding milk to coffee.

Osteoporosis poses a major global public health challenge, with women generally facing a higher risk due to lower bone mass and accelerated bone loss after menopause. Despite the importance of these findings, experts clarify that this is an observational study revealing statistical associations and does not imply that one must completely abandon coffee. The fundamental pillars for protecting bones remain regular physical activity, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and ensuring adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D.
