For the 13th time in history... Asteroid discovered 6 hours before impact with Earth

Scientists detected a small asteroid just six hours before it entered Earth’s atmosphere, where it burned up over the Indian Ocean off the northwest coast of Australia on September 6, in a rare astronomical event. Although Earth’s atmosphere is regularly exposed to such occurrences, what distinguished this event was that scientists managed to detect it before impact, marking the 13th time in history that an asteroid has been discovered prior to reaching Earth. The Catalina Sky Survey discovered the asteroid, estimated to be about 80 centimeters in diameter, and it was officially designated 2026 RW1, or CERNQ52, according to the Russia Today news website. Richard Moissl, head of the Planetary Defense Office at the European Space Agency, confirmed the event, noting that the impacting body, approximately 0.8 meters in diameter, produced a bright but harmless meteor.

For its part, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) explained that objects smaller than 25 meters in diameter almost completely disintegrate before reaching Earth’s surface, posing no danger to people or infrastructure. Only pebble-sized fragments fall into the ocean, leaving behind only a fleeting fireball. NASA added that although this asteroid posed no threat, it provided a valuable opportunity to test planetary defense capabilities, monitor larger objects, and predict potential impact threats.

The Catalina Sky Survey was the first to detect the asteroid, followed by observations from the Pan-STARRS survey. The Center for Near-Earth Object Studies then calculated its precise trajectory and impact location. Such events offer scientists a rare test of global early warning systems, help improve automated tracking tools, accelerate orbital calculations, and test communication protocols.
