US-Iranian Crisis: Anticipation for Results of 'De-escalation Diplomacy'

Diplomatic efforts continue to de-escalate tensions and foster calm between the United States and Iran, aiming to bring both sides back to the negotiating table amid cautious vigilance and anticipation regarding developments on the ground. The Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, held talks with senior Chinese officials upon his arrival in China yesterday. The discussions covered recent developments in the Middle East, particularly the US-Iran crisis, according to the official Qatari news agency, QNA, and the Xinhua News Agency.

In a related development, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, called for the return of the Strait of Hormuz to its normal state, emphasizing that this would enhance regional security and stability and ensure the smooth flow of international trade. The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported in a statement that the two ministers reviewed the bilateral and historical relations between their countries during their meeting in Berlin, discussing ways to develop and strengthen ties across various fields. They also addressed the current regional situation, stressing the importance of securing international waterways and guaranteeing freedom of maritime navigation.

The two sides discussed economic and trade relations, the volume of bilateral trade, and measures to boost it, reflecting the depth of their ties and opening further opportunities for cooperation and investment in various sectors. SPA noted that Prince Faisal and Wadephul signed a memorandum of understanding during the meeting to establish a strategic dialogue at the foreign ministers’ level, aiming to enhance consultation, coordination, and the development of bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Egypt and Turkey stressed the necessity of intensifying joint efforts to contain regional escalation, thereby supporting regional security and stability. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that this was discussed during a phone call between Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty and his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan. The ministers explored ways to further strengthen Egyptian-Turkish relations and exchanged views on various regional issues and developments. According to the statement, both ministers emphasized their commitment to building on the growing momentum in bilateral relations in recent months and enhancing cooperation, particularly in commercial and investment sectors.

In the meantime, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a brief statement on its official X platform yesterday, announcing that Marines conducted live-fire exercises aboard an amphibious assault ship in the Middle East region.

Separately, Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, announced that his country would sign an agreement on a new corridor for the Strait of Hormuz in the coming days. Iran and Oman had previously announced in a joint statement on August 25 that they had discussed a “phased framework” in Tehran, which includes establishing a “temporary joint navigation corridor” through the Strait of Hormuz, as part of their efforts to resume safe navigation in the strategic waterway. The statement added that technical negotiations between the two sides would continue to reach an agreement on a permanent navigation corridor and future arrangements for managing the strait, alongside establishing a mechanism for information exchange, navigation management, and providing related maritime and security services.

These developments come as senior Israeli officials predict that increasing pressure will drive the Iranian people to take to the streets again. An Israeli source told i24NEWS: “We do not know when the spark that will ignite protests in Tehran will come, but it will come.”
