Children’s Clothing: A Matter of Personal Freedom or Family Responsibility?

In recent years, the clothing choices of sons and daughters have become a topic worthy of serious consideration, particularly given the proliferation of fashion trends that many view as indecent and incompatible with the values and customs of our Gulf societies. Today, we see young boys and girls in early ages wearing highly bold attire, prompting the question: What is the role of the family? Who is responsible? The father? The mother? The children? Or society as a whole?

During childhood, responsibility is clear and lies primarily with the parents. Fathers and mothers are the ones who purchase clothing and instill in their children a sense of taste, modesty, and an understanding of what is appropriate for their age and community. However, the issue becomes more complex during adolescence and young adulthood, when a son or daughter may declare, “This is my outfit, and this is my personal freedom.” In response, some parents hesitate to intervene, fearing confrontation with their children.

Freedom is indeed a right, but like any right, it is linked to awareness, responsibility, and respect for others. Clothing is not merely a piece of fabric; it often reflects one’s taste, upbringing, culture, and environment. What is particularly concerning is that some garments have become increasingly bold and indecent, appearing in markets, shopping malls, public spaces, and even at certain family gatherings. It seems that previously clear boundaries are gradually disappearing. However, placing the blame solely on children is unfair.

Moreover, there is a significant influence from social media platforms, celebrities, advertisements, and global fashion trends. Young people are exposed daily to dozens of images and videos that promote a specific style of dress as a symbol of beauty, boldness, or progress. Through constant repetition, what was once considered unusual becomes commonplace. In this context, the role of oversight becomes crucial. However, this does not mean monitoring our children at every moment or turning the home into a place filled with commands and prohibitions. True oversight begins with upbringing, dialogue, and leading by example. At the same time, young people must understand that independence in choosing clothes does not negate responsibility. One can be stylish, modern, and distinctive without wearing attire that is indecent or inappropriate for the setting.

In conclusion, families are responsible for upbringing and guidance, while children are accountable for their choices as they mature. Society, the media, and influencers also bear part of the responsibility for the image they project to new generations. This issue is not a war between an old generation and a new one, nor is it a rejection of fashion or progress. Rather, it is about seeking balance between freedom and respect, and between fashion and societal values.
