The Exile of the Soul
Many people live among us physically present yet emotionally detached, indifferent to those around them and unresponsive to events, regardless of their intensity or scale. They remain in isolation even when surrounded by others.
This may be their inherent nature or the result of past experiences or incidents that caused them deep trauma, making them afraid to engage in conversation, initiate dialogue, or accept others—even if they share familial ties or work in the same environment. Regardless of the setting, their minds are elsewhere, as if they are not truly present. We have all witnessed and experienced this behavior in individuals who “go their own way.” Over time, most of these people find themselves unable to break free from this peculiar habit, and some may even perceive their happiness in adopting this lifestyle.
When a person travels abroad—whether for tourism, study, work, or medical treatment—they inevitably miss their homeland, family, and memories. If the stay is prolonged, they often feel a sense of alienation accompanied by distress and sadness, which is natural. However, it is unnatural to live in a state of alienation within one’s own land, among one’s own people, continuously rather than temporarily. If an individual does not help themselves, they will find no one else to do so, as people are preoccupied with their own lives and circumstances. Even if others show empathy, interest, or inquire about their well-being, persisting in this behavior will eventually drive them away.
Decades ago, conditions were difficult, and life required people to stick together, venturing out to seek employment and livelihood. At that time, idleness was scarce. Today, with the abundance of conveniences, services, and comforts, these factors combined have fostered a sense of isolation in some individuals. This is not an excuse, but it is a primary contributing factor.
Therefore, we hope such behaviors will diminish in the future, as some people have become strangers in their own country, isolating themselves from society in all its dimensions due to illusions and pains that exist only in their minds, not in reality.
