One astronomer recounts a humorous anecdote from the later years of his life, when his reputation as an astronomer whose predictions and forecasts never failed had become widely known. He says: “One day, an elderly woman came to my office and asked me to recite the Quran over her and ‘perform ruqyah’ (spiritual healing) for her. I replied, ‘O Hajja, I am an astronomer, not a sheikh or a religious scholar. Go to the imam of the nearby mosque, and God willing, he will not let you down.’ The old woman refused to leave and insisted that I recite for her. Her determination and steadfastness were evident. So, he wrote a small piece of paper, inscribed a few words on it, sealed it carefully, and handed it to the woman, saying, ‘Before the Maghrib prayer, soak it in hot water, then strain and drink the water. Glad tidings: you will see nothing but wellness.’ After the woman thanked him and left, one of those present asked, ‘What did you write on the paper?’ He replied, ‘I wrote, “If I can cure you, I will; but if I cannot, it is of no concern to me.”’ In Modern Standard Arabic, this means, ‘I wish you recovery, but if it does not happen, it does not matter to me.’ I share this amusing story to address certain individuals who spend their lives and wear out their years chasing one goal after another, and one life aspiration after another, without inner peace or stability. As long as God has blessed you with health and well-being, your family is around you in good health and well-being, your provision covers you, and you are spared from the needs of people, then all other matters fall under the famous astronomer’s saying: ‘If I can cure you, I will; but if I cannot, it is of no concern to me.’ This is akin to the English word ‘bonus,’ meaning an extra benefit. There is no wisdom in squandering your entire life for an extra benefit or something additional that may or may not come. Point: This may be a startling piece of news to you—you are fine.”
