Nepal floods: School accountant's warning saves hundreds of students

The school’s principal, Rajendra Daudi, was with around 900 students in the building near the Trishuli River in Nepal when a colleague came to warn them of an impending flood. Daudi told Agence France-Presse in an interview, “The accountant came to the school and said: The flood is coming, the flood is coming.” The principal immediately ordered the school to be evacuated, and teachers led hundreds of students to higher ground, explaining that he faced two possibilities: “If the information is wrong, we will lose a school day, but if it is correct, we will lose our lives.” Minutes later, the Trishuli Bazar Secondary School, which he had overseen for years, collapsed under the force of raging torrents on the morning of August 26. However, the speed of the evacuation enabled the rescue of 900 people.
