A graphic designer has created a digital application that transforms everyday items into a personal archive using artificial intelligence technologies. The app, called “Archiv,” allows users to create a private digital archive of objects they photograph in their daily lives by converting ordinary images into visually appealing, archive-style photos, thereby helping to document and preserve details of the surrounding world within sortable and shareable collections.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) quoted the business, innovation, technology, and design magazine Fast Company, stating that the app was developed by graphic designer David McGillivary. It noted that the application is still in its beta testing phase and aims to provide a digital system for collecting, organizing, and categorizing physical objects.
The app enables users to photograph anything that catches their attention, from furniture pieces to fire hydrants and other objects. It then processes the image using AI techniques to correct perspective, lighting, background, and visual noise, presenting the subject clearly in a style reminiscent of archival photography. Additionally, the app generates concise metadata for each photographed item, including its name, nature, capture date, and archival date. It automatically classifies items into simplified categories such as “Infrastructure” and “Design Elements,” making it easier for users to organize and browse their collections.
App creator David McGillivary explained that his idea stemmed from a desire to encourage users to engage more deeply with the physical world, rather than becoming increasingly immersed in the digital realm. He noted that digital tools can add a new dimension to surrounding objects, helping people notice and understand them better.
The beta version of the app also includes features for sharing collections with friends and following others. Developers are currently addressing bugs identified during testing, with future plans to add 3D viewing capabilities and develop more advanced tools for analyzing user collections and discovering patterns in the items chosen for archiving.
