NASA plans to discover lunar and planetary minerals with the 'Space Slingshot'

NASA is considering the development of a small spacecraft capable of surveying mineral resources on the Moon, a near-Earth asteroid, and Mars’ moon Phobos in a single mission, following initial funding from the agency’s Advanced Innovative Concepts program. According to Al Jazeera Net, the significance of this project lies in its potential to help scientists and planners identify what resources exist at target sites before sending landing vehicles or establishing bases. In this regard, project lead researcher Pablo Superone stated, “The biggest obstacle to space mining is that we cannot afford the cost of proving that something worth mining actually exists.” He noted that landing in the wrong location could result in the loss of an entire exploration program or a company, especially when no one has sufficient funds to repeatedly send spacecraft in hopes of finding resources. The project is named “Interplanetary Resource Surveys using a Slingshot Technology,” or “Space Slingshot,” and its importance stems from the fact that it comes as lunar exploration programs prepare to establish a more sustainable human presence in the coming decades, alongside growing interest in studying resources on the Moon, asteroids, and Mars’ moons. Knowing the locations of minerals or water before landing can help select the most beneficial sites, reducing risks and costs.
