Manchester United dominated, started scoring, and drew with Everton

Slovenian substitute Benjamin Sesko believed he had handed Manchester United their second victory of the new English Premier League season, but Everton salvaged a point at home with a 2-2 draw, secured by another substitute, new arrival Ainsley Maitland-Niles, on matchday three.

United looked set for their second win when Sesko responded to Tyrick George’s 83rd-minute equalizer by putting the visitors ahead in the 88th minute. However, Maitland-Niles unleashed a brilliant strike from outside the box, saving the Toffees from their first defeat.

Manchester United started the match with a chance for Portuguese captain Bruno Fernandes, but fortune deserted him as his shot rebounded off the crossbar in the 8th minute. Seconds later, Everton appealed for a penalty for French forward Tierno Barny, but the referee did not award it. Clear chances were scarce until the 43rd minute, when Barny also threatened United’s goal with a header, but the ball sailed over the crossbar of Belgian goalkeeper Siniša Mihajlović’s net.

United struck early in the second half, opening the scoring with a fine shot from Cameroonian forward Brian Mbeumo, who fired from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom right corner of Jordan Pickford’s net in the 46th minute.

The score remained unchanged despite some tentative efforts from both sides until the 83rd minute, when Tyrick George unleashed a stunning rocket into Mihajlović’s net, leveling the score for United’s former manager, Scottish coach David Moyes.

But the Red Devils did not give up. Following a pass from Fernandes to Luke Shaw, the latter delivered a cross that reached substitute Sesko, who headed it into Pickford’s net in the 88th minute.

As Michael Carrick’s team prepared to celebrate the win, Maitland-Niles, who had come on in the 77th minute, snatched a late equalizer with a shot from the edge of the area into the top right corner in stoppage time (90+6). This result marked the best start for the new club, having joined from French side Lyon on the final day of the summer transfer window.

Earlier, Hull City had drawn 0-0 with Aston Villa.

In other news, veteran striker Jamie Vardy, who won the Premier League title with Leicester City in 2016, has joined Burnley in the Championship on a one-year contract.

The 39-year-old became a free agent after leaving Cremonese following their relegation to Italy’s second division at the end of last season.
