Zverev and Goff continue their advance at Flushing Meadows

World No. 2 Alexander Zverev reached the quarterfinals of the US Open at Flushing Meadows, the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, after defeating Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. Polish player Iga Swiatek and American Coco Gauff also advanced to the same round in the women’s draw.

In other matches, Argentina’s Francisco Cerundulo, seeded 25th, eliminated American Taylor Fritz, the 10th seed and one of the top contenders for the title, with a score of 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Fritz had reached at least the quarterfinals in the last three editions of the tournament in New York and made it to the final in 2024, where he lost to Italy’s Jannik Sinner.

Cerundulo will face Belgian Alexander Blockx, seeded 34th, in the next round. Blockx also produced a surprise on Saturday by defeating sixth-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-0, 6-3.

Eighth-seeded Swiatek endured a tough battle to overcome Czech player Marie Bouzkova, seeded 25th, 7-6 (3-7), 7-6 (3-7). Gauff (4) defeated Spain’s Cristina Bucsa (40) 6-3, 6-4, a result that did not fully reflect the course of the match.

Another American, 14th-seeded Eva Lys, escaped the trap set by one of the season’s surprises, 18th-seeded Filipino Alexandra Eala, who did not surrender until three sets were played: 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

Meanwhile, Japanese player Naomi Osaka (13), who won the New York title in 2018 and 2020, also faced stiff competition before defeating Belgian Elise Mertens (20) in three sets: 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

American Amanda Anisimova, the 10th seed and runner-up in the previous edition, was eliminated in the third round after losing to Austrian Anastasia Potapova (25) 6-2, 7-5. Anisimova had also struggled in the second round to overcome fellow Austrian Lili Tatar (49), eventually winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
