Diplomatic moves to contain the US-Iranian escalation

The United States denied Iran’s claim that it targeted an American ship in the Strait of Hormuz, as diplomatic communications and movements intensified to contain the escalating tensions and prevent a return to all-out war in the region. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it continues to enforce a naval blockade against Iran. In a brief statement posted on its official X account yesterday, CENTCOM said its forces had redirected 92 commercial vessels, detained three ships, and boarded two others to ensure strict compliance with the blockade on Iranian ports.

CBS News quoted a CENTCOM spokesperson as stating that “there is no truth to Iran’s claim that it targeted an American ship in the Strait of Hormuz.” This came in response to Tehran’s announcement that it had targeted a U.S. boat in the strait, following the U.S. military’s targeting of three Iranian oil tankers near coastal areas the day before.

Diplomatically, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan held phone discussions with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar regarding recent regional developments. The Saudi Foreign Ministry stated in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) yesterday that Prince Faisal bin Farhan held a call with his Iranian counterpart to discuss regional developments and efforts aimed at preserving the security and stability of the region.

The statement added that the Saudi Foreign Minister received a call from his Pakistani counterpart, during which they discussed regional developments amid the current crisis, efforts to contain it, and the push for peaceful solutions through dialogue and negotiation to help de-escalate tensions and safeguard the region’s security and stability, alongside reviewing bilateral relations.

In a related development, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Dr. Majid Al-Ansari announced that Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani will begin a visit to China today, Monday, during which he will hold a series of meetings with senior Chinese officials. Al-Ansari added that the meetings will cover strategic relations between the two countries, key regional developments, and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and enhance security and stability in the region. He clarified that the talks will also emphasize the necessity of ensuring the security and freedom of international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a similar context, Egypt and Pakistan affirmed the importance of resuming the implementation of the “Islamabad” Memorandum of Understanding signed last June between the United States and Iran, and reaching a comprehensive and sustainable agreement that enhances regional security and stability and prevents the conflict from expanding in the region. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated in a statement that this was discussed in a phone call between Foreign Minister and Minister of International Cooperation Dr. Badr Abdelatty and Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, within the framework of a shared commitment to continuous coordination and consultation regarding regional developments.
