Sudden electrical discharge took a major substation out of service and cut power to parts of seven districts

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy announced the full restoration of electricity to all areas affected by the outage of one of the major main substations yesterday morning, following a sudden flashover in one of its main transformers.

In a press statement, the ministry’s spokesperson, Engineer Fatima Jawhar Hayat, said that after the sudden flashover, protection systems automatically took the entire substation out of service as a precaution to safeguard the components of the electrical network.

Hayat explained that the fault caused several substations connected to the main substation at 132 and 33 kilovolts to go out of service, affecting approximately 414 megawatts of electrical load. This resulted in power outages in parts of Salwa, Rumaythiya, Al-Bida, Mushrif, Bayan, Mubarak Al-Abdullah neighborhood, and Sabah Al-Salem.

She added that the ministry’s technical teams and emergency response units began their work immediately after the fault occurred, taking the necessary measures to isolate the fault location, inspect the substation’s components, and return both the main substation and its affiliated substations to service. Subsequently, electrical loads were reconnected gradually and safely.

Hayat noted that, thanks to the swift response and direct handling of the fault, the technical teams managed to fully restore electricity to all affected areas.

She emphasized that technical teams continue to monitor the status of the major main substation and conduct the necessary technical inspections to determine the causes of the fault in one of the main transformers, taking appropriate preventive measures to enhance the safety and stability of the electrical network.

The ministry expressed its gratitude to citizens and residents for their understanding and cooperation, while also commending the efforts of the technical teams and emergency response units and their rapid response in addressing the fault and restoring power.

Earlier, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy had announced that several main substations had gone out of service due to an urgent technical fault, causing power outages in various areas in the Hawalli and Al-Ahmadi governorates.

In a press statement, the ministry said its emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the affected sites and were doing their utmost to manage the situation and restore electricity to all areas as quickly as possible.
