“Discrimination”: Three years in prison for Mubarak Al-Sayer and two years for Al-Mulla in cases concerning the appeal on the Amir’s authority and broadcasting false news
The Criminal Division of the Court of Cassation today sentenced former MP Mubarak Al-Saier to three years in prison with hard labor. Al-Saier had been brought to trial on charges of questioning the Amir’s prerogatives and spreading false news, following his recording and broadcasting of a video clip via his account on the “X” platform.
It is recalled that the Criminal Court had previously acquitted Al-Saier in this case, while the Court of Appeal had sentenced him to two years in prison with a 5,000-dinar bail to suspend enforcement.
The court also sentenced former MP Saleh Al-Mulla to two years in prison with hard labor. Al-Mulla was brought to trial on charges of questioning the Amir’s prerogatives and powers, spreading false news, and misuse of the telephone, following his posting of tweets on his “X” platform account. The Criminal Court had previously sentenced Al-Mulla to two years in prison with hard labor and enforcement, while the Court of Appeal had suspended enforcement of the sentence for three years.
The same court also sentenced former MP Bader Al-Dahoum to one year in prison with hard labor in a case concerning contempt of the Constitutional Court during a press conference. Both the Criminal Court and the Court of Appeal had previously sentenced Al-Dahoum to one year in prison with hard labor and a 5,000-dinar bail to suspend enforcement until the judgment became final.
The court also annulled the Court of Appeal’s decision to refrain from imposing a penalty on one social media user for violating a commitment in a case in which he was accused of spreading false news and harming the country’s internal stability, and again sentenced him to three years in prison with hard labor. The accused was brought to trial after charges of spreading false news were brought against him for publishing Cabinet decisions via his personal social media accounts.
