Kuwait Cancer Control Centre Launches Specialized Educational Series on the Latest Radiation Therapy Techniques

The Radiation Oncology Department at the Kuwait Cancer Control Center launched a specialized scientific series titled “Advanced Education in Radiation Therapy Techniques,” as part of the accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs. This initiative aligns with the center’s efforts to enhance continuous professional education and development, and to keep pace with the latest global advancements and technologies in radiation oncology.

The series will span a full year, featuring one monthly scientific session that covers the latest applications and advanced techniques in radiation therapy, with participation from specialized international, regional, and local experts.

Dr. Yasser Hassan, Head of the Radiation Oncology Department at the Kuwait Cancer Control Center, told Al-Anbaa that the series covers a wide range of advanced topics in radiation therapy. These include Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for various types of tumors, as well as Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and fractionated Stereotactic Radiosurgery (fSRS) for the brain.

He added that the program also addresses Adaptive Radiation Therapy and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) techniques, alongside targeted internal radiation therapy, along with the latest practices and methods used in treatment planning and target delineation.

Hassan explained that the sessions bring together international and local expertise by hosting a select group of radiation therapy experts, alongside the participation of specialized medical staff, thereby facilitating the exchange of knowledge and exposure to the latest practices and experiences in the field.

He noted that the series places special emphasis on practical and applied aspects, through the discussion of clinical cases, the development of skills in target delineation and treatment planning, and the enhancement of the ability to apply modern techniques in daily clinical practice, all of which contribute to improving the quality and efficiency of services provided to patients.

For his part, Dr. Ahmed Al-Bushra, a Radiation Oncology Specialist at the Kuwait Cancer Control Center, told Al-Anbaa that the opening session of the series featured Professor David Palma, a prominent international expert in stereotactic radiation therapy and the treatment of oligometastatic disease.

He added that the session also included Dr. Tariq Al-Qaissy, Head of the Medical Physics Department at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh, as part of efforts to strengthen the exchange of scientific and technical expertise and to benefit from advanced experiences in radiation therapy and medical physics.

Al-Bushra emphasized that the launch of this series reflects the commitment of the Radiation Oncology Department at the Kuwait Cancer Control Center to support the continuum of medical education, enhance the exchange of expertise with global and regional centers and experts, and develop clinical practices while keeping pace with the rapid advancements in radiation therapy technologies.
