Hollywood Regains Its Audience as Summer Box Office Surpasses $4 Billion

American cinemas regained much of their momentum during the summer of 2026, as box office revenues in North America surpassed the $4 billion mark, recording the best summer season since 2019, with an increase of nearly 20% compared to the previous year. Other estimates by the end of August suggest the total reached approximately $4.6 billion.

The film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” dominated the scene, grossing over $2 billion worldwide and confirming the continued appeal of the Spider-Man character, despite declining attendance for several other superhero films. Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” also achieved notable success, surpassing $1.5 billion globally.

However, the season’s surprise came from low-budget horror films. “Obsession” collected around $505 million worldwide, despite a budget that did not exceed $750,000, while “Backrooms” earned $394 million on a budget estimated at just $10 million.

The season reveals that audiences have not abandoned movie theaters, but have become more selective, seeking an experience worth leaving the house for, whether it is a big-budget production or a small, innovative idea.
