Ministry of Health Explores Strategic Cooperation Areas with Boston Children's Hospital

Abdul Karim Al-Abdullah: The Deputy Minister of Health, Sheikh Dr. Salman Khalifa Al-Sabah, held discussions with Dr. Ziad Abdulhaqq, Executive Director of International Business Development at Boston Children’s Hospital Alliance and Global Services, on strategic cooperation areas aimed at enhancing the pediatric healthcare system in the country.

The Ministry of Health stated in a press release following the meeting held at the ministry that the session explored ways to leverage international expertise in developing operational and management models for children’s hospitals, including clinical governance, patient care pathway organization, and strengthening quality and patient safety concepts in line with global best practices and standards.

It was clarified that both sides discussed opportunities for cooperation in the specialized training and qualification of medical personnel in Kuwait, enhancing their capacity to manage delicate and complex cases, and performing medical and surgical interventions locally. The talks also focused on strengthening clinical and consultative cooperation channels, as well as exchanging expertise and knowledge.

Furthermore, the discussions covered the potential development of specialized programs in health leadership and hospital management targeting physicians and health leaders, aiming to bolster leadership and operational competencies and support the quality and efficiency of health services.

The meeting also addressed cooperation in the field of genetic medicine and advanced diagnostics, exploring the utilization of technical and scientific expertise to establish and develop a specialized laboratory for genetic testing, alongside training national personnel and transferring knowledge in genetic diagnostics and its clinical applications.

The ministry emphasized that the meeting aligns with the ministry’s efforts to expand cooperation horizons with global medical institutions and enhance knowledge transfer and national capacity building, thereby supporting the localization of specialized health expertise and services and improving the quality of pediatric care in Kuwait.

On another note, Sheikh Dr. Salman Khalifa Al-Sabah, Deputy Minister of Health, chaired the Kuwaiti delegation at the preparatory meeting of GCC Health Ministers’ Deputies, held in preparation for the 12th GCC Health Ministers’ Conference scheduled for September 6 in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The meeting addressed several priority health files and joint action pathways, including the strategic stockpile of medicines and medical supplies, the GCC Health Excellence Award, screening of expatriate workers, and health insurance. It also reviewed the implementation of previous decisions and recommendations and discussed several proposals to be submitted to the upcoming ministerial meeting.

The session also reviewed a number of draft decisions and recommendations related to developing joint GCC health work, with Kuwait actively contributing to drafting several of them, including those concerning defining health cooperation areas with the European Union, consistent with the joint health work pathways and priorities of the GCC states.

The meeting addressed the follow-up on implementing the action plan of GCC Health Ministers for the period 2026–2030, launched during the 11th Ministerial Conference hosted by Kuwait in 2025, to support the sustainability of coordination in joint health programs and initiatives and to keep pace with health priorities and challenges.

Agenda items included the application of modern technologies and artificial intelligence in the health sector, reflecting the shared GCC interest in keeping pace with technological developments and leveraging them to enhance the efficiency and quality of health services while ensuring patient safety and relevant professional and regulatory frameworks.

Deputy Minister of Health Sheikh Dr. Salman Khalifa Al-Sabah emphasized that joint GCC health work is based on a comprehensive vision centered on coordinating efforts, exchanging expertise, and building on achieved accomplishments, thereby enhancing the readiness and sustainability of health systems in GCC states.

He noted that preparatory meetings serve as an important milestone for aligning perspectives and crystallizing shared priorities before presenting them to health ministers, reaffirming Kuwait’s commitment to continuing its active role in supporting the trajectory of GCC health cooperation and integration, in service of the aspirations of GCC states and their peoples.
