In Video: Traffic Department Launches Smart Home Booking for Vehicles on the 6th

The Ministry of Interior announced that the General Directorate of Traffic will begin implementing the “Smart Home Detention” system for vehicles subject to detention as a penalty for their violations, starting on Sunday, September 6, 2026. This initiative is part of the Ministry’s efforts to develop its operational framework, leverage smart systems, and streamline traffic procedures.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry explained that the system allows for the installation of a detention device on the vehicle at the location where the violation occurred. The detention period will begin to be calculated from midnight of the same day, thereby allowing the violator sufficient time to transport the vehicle to the designated home detention site.

The statement noted that the General Directorate of Traffic has set the device installation fee at 10 dinars, plus a daily ground fee of 2 dinars for each day of detention.

The system also enables vehicles currently held in traffic detention garages to be transferred to the Smart Home Detention system to complete their remaining detention period, thereby providing greater flexibility in enforcing procedures.

The statement added that upon the expiration of the detention period, the violator will receive a notification via the “Sahel” app confirming the end of the detention term. The violator must then visit one of the sites designated by the General Directorate of Traffic to complete the vehicle release procedures.

The Ministry emphasized that the implementation of the system is part of ongoing steps to develop traffic services, enhance their quality, and facilitate procedures. Meanwhile, the General Directorate of Traffic has called on drivers to comply with traffic laws and avoid violations, in order to safeguard their own safety and that of other road users, and to reinforce traffic security and safety.
