Are you aware of the health risks of nail beautification?

Common nail treatments, such as gel polish, acrylics, and the BIAB (Builder In A Bottle) technique, are among the most sought-after cosmetic services for achieving a sleek and long-lasting nail appearance. However, their repeated use raises health concerns regarding the safety of the skin and nails. These concerns coincide with the United Kingdom and the European Union’s ban on the chemical TPO, used in some gel products, due to research indicating its potential adverse effects on the endocrine system and fertility, prompting companies to develop alternative formulations free of this substance.

Experts note that the greatest damage often stems not from the polish itself, but from application and removal practices. Over-filing the nails weakens their layers and affects keratin, the protein responsible for their strength.

Moreover, contact with uncured gel on the skin can cause permanent allergies due to its acrylate content, while leaving artificial nails like acrylics on for extended periods can trap moisture and create a fertile environment for bacterial growth. Although the BIAB technique protects nails from breaking thanks to its thick layer, frequent removal makes natural nails progressively thinner and weaker over time.

In contrast, the Japanese manicure tops the list of healthy options and safe alternatives for those wishing to give their nails a break. It relies on buffing natural nails with a paste rich in minerals and beeswax to impart a natural shine, emphasizing that nails do not need to “breathe” but rather require gentle care and consistent hydration. To avoid general risks, experts recommend reading product ingredients, choosing types free of banned substances, avoiding aggressive filing, and refraining from misusing professional tools at home.
