Al-Salibikhat, fielding a reduced squad, forces a draw against Al-Shabab
Al-Sulaibikhat secured a 1-1 draw against Al-Shabab despite playing with ten men after their defender, captain Ali Taher, was sent off, earning their first point in the Zain League Premier Division. The match took place this evening at Abdullah Al-Khalifa Stadium, part of the Yarmouk Club in Mishref, as part of the second round of the Zain League Premier Division. Al-Shabab moved up to four points after their 3-2 victory over Al-Jahra in the opening round.
Football presented one of its unusual scenarios in the first half of the Al-Shabab vs. Al-Sulaibikhat clash. A team that performed better, dominated possession, and repeatedly took the initiative to score ended up trailing by a goal or more. This is a lesson often taught by "the beautiful game," which does not recognize superiority or aesthetic performance, but rather rewards those who find the back of the net. This was the scenario of the first half: Al-Sulaibikhat was the better side, even though they did not seriously threaten Al-Shabab’s goalkeeper, Jasem Al-Awadi. However, they trailed thanks to the high finishing sense of Al-Shabab striker Omar Al-Hubaiter, who volleyed the second rebound from the defense in stoppage time (45+5), sending it into the far left corner of Al-Sulaibikhat goalkeeper Abdullah Saad’s net. Al-Shabab went ahead despite not being the more dangerous or dominant team in the first half.
Al-Sulaibikhat pressed hard at the start of the second half in an attempt to equalize, but their opponents did not retreat as they had in the first half. Instead, they took the initiative to add a second goal, relying on fast counter-attacks. Their situation worsened when Al-Sulaibikhat’s Brazilian striker, Michel Angelo, caused captain Ali Taher to receive his second yellow card, forcing him off the field and leaving his team trailing and down to ten men (65th minute).
Despite being a man down, Al-Sulaibikhat continued their pursuit of an equalizer. A long-range shot from Mubarak Saed deflected off Munir Al-Subaie, changed direction, and deceived goalkeeper Al-Awadi to level the score (71st minute).
Enthusiasm dominated the final minutes of the match, with both teams exchanging attacks. Al-Sulaibikhat goalkeeper Abdullah Saad saved his goal from an Angelo shot, which resulted in a corner kick (75th minute). He also brilliantly saved a shot from Matheus Toto (88th minute) and prevented Al-Shabab’s Ali Salman from scoring the winning goal in stoppage time (90+5) by blocking the shot off the right post. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Referee Abdullah Arab managed the match well, with most of his decisions being correct thanks to his good positioning and calculated movement. He sent off Ali Taher of Al-Sulaibikhat and booked his teammate, Lucas Chalon.
