"Parthenope" – A Rare Black Cub Appears for the First Time in an Italian Garden

The Naples Zoo in Italy witnessed the first public appearance of a rare black Bengal tiger cub to visitors, an event highlighting the efforts of captive breeding programs to conserve threatened species and enhance their genetic diversity.

According to the Italian news agency RaiNews, the zoo’s management announced that the cub, named “Parthenope,” was born last May to a male and female Bengal tiger that arrived at the zoo in 2021 as part of a dedicated program for tiger breeding and conservation, as reported by the Syrian News Agency (SANA).

The cub is distinguished by its dark black fur, the result of a genetic condition known as “melanism,” which leads to increased melanin pigment in the skin and hair, while the distinctive Bengal tiger spotting pattern remains visible to varying degrees beneath the dark coat. The zoo’s management stated that the birth of “Parthenope” represents a significant success for the breeding program, particularly because maintaining genetic diversity is a key factor in supporting the future of species facing threats in their natural habitats.

The cub will remain with its mother during its early developmental stages and will later be transferred to another facility when ready, in accordance with zoo breeding and management programs for Bengal tigers. The Bengal tiger faces increasing pressures due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and illegal poaching.
