Study reveals a shared "alphabet" in bird songs: 8 vocal patterns behind thousands of melodies

A research team has reached new findings suggesting that the vast diversity in bird songs may rely on a limited number of fundamental vocal patterns, a discovery that sheds light on the mechanisms of avian communication. A report published in the journal Science detailed how researchers analyzed more than 116,000 audio recordings from approximately 3,160 species of songbirds, revealing that their songs can be classified into eight main vocal patterns, which are combined in various ways to produce this extensive diversity.

The researchers explained that while each species retains its distinctive vocal characteristics, these fundamental patterns serve as “musical notes” from which melodies are constructed. The study also demonstrated that the environment plays a significant role in shaping songs: birds in dense forests tend to use simpler sounds that travel longer distances, whereas faster and more complex songs are prevalent in temperate environments, where communication and breeding conditions differ.

The researchers noted that other factors, such as body size, beak shape, and social behavior, also influence the nature of the songs. At the same time, the study highlighted that its findings are limited to passerine birds and rely on available recording data, indicating a need for further research to broaden understanding and verify these patterns among other bird groups.
